Book Report 2 : Fahrenheit 451

Bradbury Ray, Fahrenheit 451, Los Angeles,CA
Ballantine Books: 1953

Reason, Type and Setting: I read this book last year in Slovakia, it has the same name in Slovak. I actually didn't pick this book, it was recommended to me by my dad, and he said it is a really good book. It's a science-fiction novel and takes place sometimes in 21st century, in a unspecified city.

Plot: The story takes place in a futuristic american city, at these times people don't read books anymore. Main character, Guy Montag, is a fireman, but he doesn't put fires down, he sets them up. All the books are banned. He meets a young girl named Clarisse, and she opens his eyes, so he starts to read the books, which are about to be burnt. Then he meets a guy named Faber who encourages him to read the books. Montag's own wife betrayed him. His chief Beatty finds out about books so she puts him under arrest. He escapes, joins the nationwide network of book lovers, and they together rebuild the mankind.

Character: I chose Guy Montag, because I like his character. Even he is confused, frustrated, full of stress almost for the entire story, he's trying to find himself and also think about the meaning of books. He is a main character, and basically ste dtory focuses on him. The plot is changed by him all the time, and at the end of the story he becomes a new man.

Evaluation: I expected more from this novel. First of all, I didn't expect it to be a sci-fi. That was my very first surprise. The main idea I was able to catch from it was how important are books in our lives and how bad is society these days. Everyone is focusing on TV shows, iPods, but there is no more time left fom a simple reading.
I can't actually put myself in the plot, because I'm a totally different person. I love books and i love reading.
The end of the book was kinda HOLLYWOOD-ish, but even in spite of that fact, it was a nice reading.

Author, Context and Trivia: This was my first time I heard about this author. I know totally nothing about him. But after a little research I found out, that he was American novelist of the 20th century, especially interested in horrors, sci-fi, mystery topics. His most famous books are The Martian Chonicles, Fahrenheit 451, The Fog Horn.
I'm definitely gonna read something more from him, because I love mystery books.

Crucible Act 1 Questions

1) Allegory is a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms; figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another.
Ex: Michael Curtiz: Casablanca

2)Tragedy is a dramatic composition, often in verse, dealing with a serious or somber theme, typically that of a great person destined through a flaw of character or conflict with some overpowering force, as fate or society, to downfall or destruction.
Ex: W.Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet

3)Historical fiction is a narrative in novel form, characterized chiefly by an imaginative reconstruction of historical events and personages.
Ex: Michael Shaara: The Killer Angels

4)"Crucible" means a severe test.

5)Once, when I was in the firs or second grade, I admit that I wasn't the best person in this world, but one girl, who really didn't like me, because I did better on the math test (!) starting spreading lies about me, like I beat up girls, and how I curse on my friends... The entire grade, my classmates, friends, basically everyone stopped talking to me, period. Afterwards I was really really sad, but then one of my best friends found out about that crap, and everything was back on the old track.

No parking in alley

My picture shows the oppression in way of breaking the law. The sign clearly says no parking in alley, however we all can still see cars meanly parking over there, like nothing. I don't think it's a huge problem, or that big example of oppression, but I tkink the picture is really good. If I was the driver of those cars, I would probably park over there too, just because those people probably live in those houses...

Barder and Flying Dog

I was lying on my bed. i had a couple of drinks. Then i saw this dog flying over my head. I was probably high, also. It all started with Jim bringing some stuff. We really had fun. But later then cops came and everything was over. Even Anna dumped me. my life is a piece of trash. Maybe that's the reason why I see this dog. He is awesome. But after like an hour in a hospital, it turned out, that the flying dog was real. It was a toy of one of my roommates. When I was able to leave that depressing place, I walked out and some random kid was messing around with his dog. They ran in the middle of the street and got hit by a truck. Later that day, little child died. Since that day, I've been totally sober, not even a drop, not even a drag. I'm done.

MOPA - creative writing

She was lonely. Nella was the only child and parents did't really care about her. Once she was in the woods, just sitting on the wet grass listening to her iPod, the weirdest thing happened. A dog fell down from a tree. She couldn't believe it, so she climbed the tree to look what was in there. It turned out, that there was another dog. He started talking to her. He was from planet ZERO and he came here to save the world. Nella offered him a help. She was too tired and desperate of her life. No one ever liked her, so what's the point. The very first thing they had to do was to hunt down the WOOD MONSTER, who had been killing everything and everybody around him since ever. The population of the world has dropped from 6 billion to 4 milion in only a week. They could beat him only with a feeling called love. And Nella owned it. After like 2 weeks of searching they ended up with nothing. Now they were having a picnic uder the tree, talking to each other, and suddenly, an arrow is flying. Nella heard it coming. It was heading towards the dog appereantly, but she loved him, so she jumbed in between him and that piece of wood. She suddenly died, but with her also the monster falls down in death. She sacrifised herself for good of someone else. And that killed the monster.

Book Report 1: The Little Prince

Exupery, Antoine De Saint, The Little Prince, France
Harvest Books
12/05/07

Reason, type and setting: I read this book approximately 100 times. I used to know it by heart when I was yougner. Of course, the plot is very deep, so I didn't know what does the book mean. But later then, I finaly realized that I have to read it again. It was written during World War 2, and the story was influented by it.

Plot: The entire story is about a pilot, who crashed in the Sahara desert. He is also a narrator of the story. Then he meets a little kid, called the little prince, and he askes him to draw him a sheep. It turns out, that the little prince is from a little planet called Asteroid 325. He was the only person on this planet and he takes care of it from a damage caused by trees called baobabs. Then he found a strange rose and fell in love with it.
He leaves the planet and discovers other planets. Also The Earth. The end of the book is really important, it talkes about people on the earth, that they often don't see what is really important in their lives. Little Prince dies , the pilot fixes his plane thinking that prince is back on his planet.

Character: There are only two protagonists in this story. The Little Prince. Short, blond kid. Not really specified. I picked him, because I think he is the most important character in the story. Brings a really important idea to lives of adults, that every adult was a child, not every one remebers it.

Evaluation: I recommend this book to everyone. I think every single person on this planet should read this beautiful novel. Not only adults, but also kids. It is important, that you don't forget that you used to be a child. Litlle prince symbolizes love, hope, innocence, and everything what a child can be. And it's in everyone of us. Either you are 80 or 16 years old. It doesn't matter. It taught me, that we have to think about really important thing in our lives and actually find out, what are those.
In spite the fact, that this book was written in 50's, it is still current. People haven't changed. It's linked with every single person in our lives.

I wouldn't change the conclusion of this book. I think it's pretty clear why. It's a message. For everyone.

Author, Context and Trivia:
Antoine De Saint- Exupéry is french author, who wrote this book when he was in the USA. His other pieces are Southern Mail, Night Flight, Wind, Sand and stars...and a lot more. I haven't read any of his other books, because in my country they weren't that popular. Besides The Little Prince. I don't think there is a similar book to this one. I'd like to call it a masterpiece, because those who read it know what I'm talking about. I definitely wanna read some other books from Exupéry, but I didn't have a chance so far.

E:prompt 1 reflection

I was little bit confused when I first read this article. I don't think we should even consider situations comparable to this one. What if....? People always ask you what if..I just don't see the point. What if...is not a real situation directly linked with you.
But ok, there are plenty of people who like to help. Even for 9 months, and that is a long time. I'm writing this now, and I don't have any feelings for it, so I just say I would leave that bed. Why? People have to be a little bit selfish. But maybe my opinion would change if I would be actually lying on that bed. Watching someone dying? I don't think anyone could do that. Just let him die.

Current Event 12/07/07

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Rain began pelting parts of Southern California early Friday, triggering fears that recent wildfires may have left the region susceptible to flash flooding.

The rain is part of a fierce winter storm from the Pacific Northwest that moved in sooner than expected.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for coastal and mountain areas through Friday afternoon.

The forecast called for winds gusting to about 30 mph ahead of a storm front that could drop up to an inch of rain in urban areas and up to 3 inches in the mountains, said Stuart Seto, chief weather specialist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

Southern California has had a very dry rainy season, and it will be the first time since April 2006 that so much rain has fallen from a single storm, Seto said.

The weather service also issued a high wind warning for the mountain areas and in the Antelope Valley in north Los Angeles County. The winds were expected to blow 30 to 45 mph, with potentially damaging gusts of up to 60 mph, said meteorologist Todd Hall.

Areas denuded by recent fires were a special concern. Wildfires have stripped vegetation from thousands of acres now susceptible to excessive runoff and erosion.

"It doesn't take much to set off those mud and debris flows," Seto said.

Before the storm hit, thousands of people were evacuated on Thursday from three Orange County canyons burned bare by wildfires earlier in the year. Orange County sheriff's patrol cars broadcast the warning through loudspeakers to residents of Modjeska, Williams and Silverado canyons.

In Los Angeles County, work crews sandbagged hillsides in Griffith Park, where about 1,200 acres -- almost 2 square miles -- were scorched in May. Other work was under way in Malibu, where a wildfire destroyed 53 homes in November.

In Washington state, meanwhile, officials partially reopened a section of Interstate 5 that had been swamped by floodwater and closed for three days after a previous storm system crashed through the region.

A 20-mile stretch of the freeway near Centralia was shut down Monday night, when the swollen Chehalis River made the route too dangerous to use. The interstate eventually was covered by as much as 10 feet of water, officials said.

By Thursday night, receding floodwater and repair work allowed the state to open one northbound and one southbound lane, with traffic initially limited to freight haulers.

Mock trial Summary

I think I didn’t have to prepare too much, because my role was to be a member of the jury. They are supposed to be objective ordinary people with little or no knowledge of the law. Anyways, I had known the American trials only from movies, and now it was little bit different. It actually felt like in a court room. I think, Nathaniel did the best, he was well prepared, he had evidence, and despite the fact, that they “lost”, I consider him as the no. one. I think the judge could have been prepared better next time. Mollie was really good, but I think she was little bit confused of her job.
I don’t really know, what could we learned from the trial about human nature and freedom.. This was a really great experience for me, since this is my first time in US, but I unfortunately can’t see the point.

Trial Reflection

Trial reflection Viktor Vincze

I think, that US judicial system is one of the best in the world. The fact, that the the conclusion is made by an ordinary people is in my opinion perfect. So its not only up to one person, like in Slovakia, but up to 12 people, who have nothing in common with the law. I really like it.

If are there any parts, which are more important than others? Of course yes. I think the most important part is the final speech. Mebers of the jury are not lawyers, they think by feelings. And real lawyers can really influent them just by well prepared speech. Also, what I find pretty important, is showing an evidence right in the court. Some action, sound or something like that. That is pretty impressive.

I would definitely trust the jury. The defense should be built on the base of thinking of ordinary people. So if you have a good lawyer, that the jury will trust you.

My role was to be a member of the jury. As I say, jurors are the most important people in the court room. I think, since we weren’t doing an actual trial, jurors in our classroom had the easiest job. Just to sit and listen. Afterwards say their opinion, that was it. Outcome was pretty predictable. I mean, it’s probably because of the time. We dont live at the time of witches so we all knew, that he ws gonna be not guilty.

Salem witch trials couldn’t happen today, because there is only a little percentage of people, who actually believe in ghosts and in extraordinary things. I think, in that time it was really strong. Religion used to be the biggest part of peoples life so they were really influented by it.

'Chinese' tequila worries Mexico

Mexican politicians are demanding action to protect the tequila industry from Chinese competition.
The lower house of Congress voted to urge the government to stop Chinese firms patenting maguey - a type of agave cactus used in tequila.
MPs are also worried that Chinese and Japanese firms could target the market in another cactus species, nopal.
Nopal leaves are increasingly popular in the US, where there is already strong demand for tequila.
"Nopal and Maguey are Mexican plants and if we don't take the necessary measures in time, we run the risk of losing the denomination of origin", Cesar Duarte, the deputy who sponsored the move, told the Efe news agency.
Mr Duarte said the main Mexican farmers' union had been told that Chinese firms had begun legal moves to register the nopal plant with the European Commission as a Chinese product.
But the Mexican Agriculture Ministry said that so far Brussels had received no requests regarding either mopal or maguey.
Tequila power
The Mexican tequila industry has expanded rapidly since the early 1990s.
Marketing experts have tried to change its reputation from a cheap peasant drink to a sophisticated international spirit like whisky.
In 2005, Mexico produced a record 210m litres of tequila - almost half of which was exported. Sales to the US alone were worth more than $400m.
Mexican tequila producers have pushed for tequila products to have a denomination of origin system similar to the one used in the wine industry.
Mexico argues that the maguey is a uniquely Mexican product because 150 of the 200 varieties of the plant are found in its territory.

Jordan in a gate

America is known as THE FOOD CORE, so this is text of son of this piggy lady above:

Well, first of all, I want to say I'm sorry mom for every single letter. But in my opinion the world needs to know about you. Do you remebmer that day when at the subway station that weird guy took a picture of you? That was my man. I hired him, to do picture of people and to pretend, that he's a scientist. He was waiting only for you.

That morning, when we left Mc'Donalds's, after you finished 3rd BigMac meal, I went to the bathroom and I called him. everything was working out perfectly. He got ready at the station, I pulled you out of the fastfood restaurant and went with you to "say goodbye".

I know, that I I would have ever tried to take a picture of you, I would have been dead. So that's why I prepared this trap, beacause I need to send this important message to everyone. Mom, please, look at you. You're so scared. And it's only a subway, not a surgery. Mom, I know you really love raising the profit of Mc'Donald's, but this has to stop. For good. I'm ashamed to walk with you in the street, since you punch everyone around with your "tyres" on the stomach.

Mom, you know I love you. But try to be self-critical. You see this picture? Do you like it? Do you like the fact, that you can barely fit into that subway gate?Just think about it.PLEASE.

When Jordan got the the work that morning, everyone was laughing at her. She didn't understand why, but in couple of minutes she got shocked in front of her computer. The backgorund of the screen has been changed. Instead of beautiful pink flowers there was this really huge object trying to walk through the gate.

Now, after 5 years, Jordan weighst 120 pounds, which is 100 pounds less then it used to be. Her son is proud of her again a she feels actually better.
